HEAD and FACE planes (BELOW)

When learning to draw or paint the human face (or really any head of any creature) it's best to focus on construction rather than muscular anatomy. That's because heads are mostly bone and cartilage.

Face planes and forms

The skull is the most important bony form to get acquainted with because:

1. The head is the main focus and vehicle of communication for the body (second only to the hands).
2.The vast majority of the underlying structure of the head is in the skull.

Head Planes

Start with a ball (technically an oblong (stretched out) ball when viewed from the side) and then slice the sides off to form to (more or less) flat planes on the side of the head.

After the flat planes on the side of the head the next most distinct plane is that formed by the zygomatic arch which stretches from the corner of the lips up to the frontal base of the ear.
The third most distinct plane breakdown is the brow region which sets the eyes into a cavern like socket.
The forth most distinct plane breakdown is probably the forehead and it's two lateral and singular medial plane.
The fifth being the cartilaginous structure of the nose.
The sixth being the distinct planes of the upper and lower lips
